KEVIN GARNETT IS SLICED IN THE EYE BY ANDREW BYNUM
January 1, 2008
- Paul Pierce scored 33 points and Kevin Garnett had 22 points, 12 rebounds and six assists Sunday night to lead the Boston Celtics to a 110-91 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Boston took the lead in the first quarter
and never relinquished it. Each time the Lakers threatened, the Celtics would pull away again. Kobe Bryant scored 22 for Los Angeles, going just 6-of-25 from the floor. Lamar Odom had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The victory in the final of two meetings between the teams this season ran Boston's NBA-best record to 26-3 and extended its winning streak to six straight. It also ended a four-game winning streak by the Lakers, who still have
won 10 of their last 13. The Celtics prevented Lakers coach Phil Jackson from moving ahead of Boston Hall of Fame coach Red Auerbach on the career wins ladder. Jackson remained tied with Auerbach for seventh on the all-time list
with 938 victories. Ray Allen added 19 points for Boston and Tony Allen, filling in for Rajon Rondo, had 16.
There obviously was a lot of emotion during the game -- and a lot of jawing at the referees, who called seven technical fouls over the course of the game: on the Celtics' Garnett, Kendrick Perkins, Ray Allen and coach Doc Rivers;
and the Lakers' Bryant, Trevor Ariza and Kwame Brown. Odom also was called for a flagrant foul late in the game, with Ray Allen drawing his technical on the same play. Garnett left the game briefly in the second quarter to get two
stitches above his right eye.
Los Angeles, which trailed by double digits much of the game, narrowed the gap to 72-66 with 3:17 left in the third quarter, but Pierce scored 10 points in a row to give the Celtics an 82-66 lead at the end of the period. Boston was
up 53-45 at halftime, with Los Angeles narrowing the gap after falling behind by 17, at 45-28, early in the second quarter. Pierce had 16 points for the Celtics and Bryant 16 for the Lakers at the break. Bryant made just three of his
15 shots from the floor, but 10 of 11 from the free throw line. - NBA.com

KEVIN GARNETT SLIDES PAST JAZZ THANKS TO PAUL PIERCE
December 30, 2007
- Paul Pierce was angry and embarrassed after the first half. Pierce had no points and no rebounds in 19 minutes, 33 seconds, essentially leaving the Boston Celtics without one third of their "Big Three.'' Pierce woke
up at halftime and led the Celtics to their fifth straight victory, beating the Utah Jazz 104-98 Saturday night.
"I was really mad at myself at the half,'' said Pierce, who scored all of his 24 points in the second half. "I knew I was going to come out more aggressive at both ends of the court. That's what I tried to do.'' Pierce
finished with six rebounds - also all in the second half - including a crucial one that helped seal the Celtics' 14th win in their last 15 games.
Pierce had just broken a tie on a layup with 28 seconds left to play. Utah's C.J. Miles tried to put Utah back up with a 3-pointer, but the ball bounced high off the rim and Pierce was able to grab it, draw a foul and seal it
for the Celtics with two free throws. Ray Allen scored 23 and Kevin Garnett added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Celtics, who complete a four-game road trip Sunday at the Lakers.
The NBA's best team is looking at sweeping a cross-country trip. "In my years past, we always talked about going .500. Being able to go .500 was a successful road trip,'' Allen said. "We're ahead of the curve here.'' - NBA.com

KEVIN GARNETT DEFEATS DURANT AND THE SONICS
December 28, 2007
- Forget those two new guys who give Boston its latest version of the Big Three. Paul Pierce can still carry the Celtics just like the past when he was the only option. While most of the attention focused on Ray
Allen's return to Seattle, it was Pierce who took over for Boston on Thursday night, much as he had to do in past seasons without the type of All-Star help now surrounding him. Pierce scored 26 of his season-high
37 points in the second half, and the Celtics held off the pesky SuperSonics 104-96.
With Kevin Garnett unable to match his strong first half and Allen never finding an offensive groove, it was Pierce who made shot after shot in the second half to help the league's best team avoid an embarrassing loss.
"We've got so many players capable,'' Pierce said. "It could be me one night, and we recognize that. Nights that (Garnett) or Ray has it going we recognize that and try to get it to them as much as we can.''
Pierce hit 11 of 27 shots and 10 of 11 free throws. He was dominant in the closing minutes of the third quarter and into the fourth, scoring 14 points in a little more than 7 minutes to help the Celtics win their fourth
straight and improve to 24-3. The 24 wins matches the Celtics' victory total from all of last season. "That means we were really bad,'' Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "That doesn't mean we're good this year. We've done
nothing in our minds. We've proven we can play 27 games. That's it.''
Garnett scored 14 of his 23 points in the first half, and Allen added a mostly quiet 10, playing his first game in Seattle since a draft night trade that sent the seven-time All-Star to the Celtics. Boston even got 13 points
from reserve Eddie House. He and Pierce combined to score the Celtics' first 18 points of the fourth quarter -- in just 5 minutes. Pierce closed the third quarter on a tear and carried his hot hand into the fourth, finally
allowing the Celtics to pull away. - NBA.com

KEVIN GARNETT LOOKED LIKE BASKETBALL ROYALTY VS KINGS
December 27, 2007
- Boston has won 12 of 13 games, but the early season success has been attributed to a soft schedule as well as the offseason additions of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to a lineup that had relied primarily on Pierce
in recent years. One dominating stretch in the second quarter turned out to be enough to carry the Boston Celtics to a win in their first West Coast game this season.
It was a chippy game with the Celtics getting called for two technicals and the Kings committing many hard fouls. "I got poked in the eye twice tonight and I got elbowed in the head,'' Garnett said. "It's part of the
game. I could tell they were a little edgy. Some of their guys were out of character doing some of the things they were doing. I guess they were doing whatever they thought they had to do to win this game.''
Paul Pierce scored 14 of his 16 points during a 33-5 second-quarter run that led the Celtics to their first win in Sacramento in more than 11 years, an 89-69 victory over the Kings on Wednesday night. "It's the only
building I probably hadn't won in in my whole NBA career,'' Pierce said. "I got that off my back now.''
The Celtics started the big second-quarter run by scoring nine straight points in a 58-second span, getting a three-point play from Allen and consecutive 3-pointers from House to go back up by five. That's when Pierce
took over. After going scoreless in the first 17 minutes of the game, Pierce scored 14 points in the final 7 minutes of the half, hitting his third 3-pointer in the final minute to make it 53-29. - NBA.com

KEVIN GARNETT PUTS ANOTHER WIN DOWN FOR THE CELTICS
December 24, 2007
- Opponents expect big scoring nights from the likes of Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. But Rajon Rondo? Often forgotten in the Celtics' star-packed starting lineup, Rondo matched a career high
with 23 points -- including his first two 3-pointers of the season -- and Boston cruised to a 103-91 victory over the Orlando Magic on Sunday night.
"I think the league has the misconception of the three-headed monster, but obviously when you play a team that good, there is no room for error. You have to play almost flawless,'' Magic guard Keyon Dooling said.
Pierce scored 24 points and Garnett had 21 points to go along with 12 rebounds for the Celtics (22-3), who have the best record in the NBA. Allen scored 22, marking the first time this season the Celtics had four
players with better than 20 points in a game.
"Most teams start doubling off Rondo,'' Allen said. "He's proven that he can knock that jump shot down. That's been the question of him going into the season and, up to this point, he's done a great job for us.''
The Celtics led by as many as 20 in the third quarter. But the Southeast Division-leading Magic, who handed the Celtics their first loss on Nov. 18, twice cut the lead to fewer than 10 in the fourth quarter.
Both times, Allen responded with 3-pointers to put the Celtics back up by a dozen. "You need a lot of things to go right against them,'' Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "They have a lot of people out there and they
make shots.'' Dwight Howard led the Magic with 23 points and 14 rebounds for his 25th double-double of the season. Hedo Turkoglu scored 19 points and Rashard Lewis added 15 for Orlando, which has dropped seven of its
last nine games. - NBA.com

Kevin Garnett Bounces Back With A Win Over The Bulls
December 22, 2007
- The Boston Celtics have only lost one home game this season, and that was plenty for Kevin Garnett. "What you saw tonight was what we call 'stopping the bleeding,''' he said after the Celtics beat
Chicago 107-82 on Friday to stop their losing before it became a streak. "When we lose, we want it to be very, very, very, very few, and we want to learn from what mistakes we made in the loss and apply
it in the next game. I thought we did a good job of that.''
Paul Pierce scored 15 of his 22 points in the third quarter, going 4-for-4 from 3-point range in the period as the Celtics pulled away. Boston recovered quickly from Wednesday's last-second loss to Detroit,
taking an early lead against the Bulls, never trailing and never surrendering its double-digit lead after scoring 10 consecutive points to make it 40-22 with 7:50 left in the first half.
"The loss to Detroit left a bad taste in our mouths,'' said Pierce, who joined Garnett on the bench for the fourth quarter. "It didn't matter who we played tonight, we were going to come out
and take it to them. It didn't matter who was in the building.'' Pierce added seven rebounds and Ray Allen scored 18 for the Celtics, who still have the best record in the NBA (21-3) despite
ending their franchise record-tying home win streak at 12 on Wednesday.
"We were fired up,'' said Garnett, who had 12 points and seven rebounds. "The Detroit game was still on our minds. We wanted to get back to the things we know we do well.'' Ben Gordon scored 19
for Chicago, and rookie Aaron Gray had 14 to reach a career-high for his second consecutive game filling in for the injured Ben Wallace. Tyrus Thomas grabbed nine rebounds for the Bulls, who had
won eight straight against Boston before losing in their first matchup this season. - NBA.com

Kevin Garnett Gets First Home Loss Thanks To Billups
December 20, 2007
- Kevin Garnett led the Celtics with 26 points, and Ray Allen, who returned after missing the last two games because of a sore right ankle, had 24, including a tying 3-pointer with 18.9 seconds to play.
"It's a good lesson for our guys,'' Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "In shootaround I had to get on them today about paying attention. One of the things we kept saying is 'Chauncey Billups pump fakes.'''
Billups hit two free throws with a tenth of a second left and the Detroit Pistons handed the Boston Celtics their first home loss of the season, 87-85 on Wednesday night. Billups, who scored 12 of his
team-high 28 points in the final quarter, was fouled by Tony Allen. On the previous possession, Billups' turnover gave the Celtics a chance to grab the lead.
After Paul Pierce missed a shot from the left baseline and Rasheed Wallace grabbed the rebound before calling time out with 1.7 seconds left, Billups then talked with teammate Richard
Hamilton about what to do if they collected the inbounds pass. "I knew there was enough time to get a pump fake, if I didn't have a clean look and I saw him running at me,'' said Billups,
in his 11th season and a member of Detroit's 2004 championship team. "That's why I was so mad that I blew the first one.''
"Chauncey's one of the best clutch players in the league,'' Boston's Kevin Garnett said. "You know the clock's winding down. You don't put it on one person. We have to roll on.'' The matchup
featured the league's top two defensive teams and lived up to its billing. In the opening minutes, both teams found that driving to the paint would be continually challenged and were forced
to rely on jumpers. - NBA.com

Kevin Garnett Keeps The Celtics Win Streak Alive
December 17, 2007
- With another dominant defensive performance, the Boston Celtics matched their longest winning streak in 14 years. Paul Pierce scored 18 points, Kevin Garnett had 16 and the Boston
Celtics extended their streak to nine games by beating the Toronto Raptors 90-77 on Sunday. "Our philosophy is that defense is going to win games for us,'' Garnett said. "We're trying
to have the defense fuel the offense, and it's been working.''
The Atlantic Division leaders matched their longest winning streak since March 16-31, 1993. Boston is 20-2. The only other time the franchise opened the season with that record, it won
the 1963-64 championship. The Celtics lead the NBA in opponents' scoring average and scoring differential. "That's going to be our staple pretty much all year long,'' Pierce said. "We're
going to take pride on the defensive end.
"When you get 12 guys committed and on the same page, night in and night out, anything is possible,'' Pierce added. "That's what we have right now.'' Rajon Rondo had 14, Eddie House
came off the bench to score 11 and Tony Allen and James Posey each had 10. Posey said accountability up and down the roster is the reason for Boston's success on defense.
"We've got guys that take responsibility when they mess up,'' Posey said. "We correct our mistakes, get back out there and make sure we're on the same page. We just cause havoc for the
most part.'' The Celtics won their second straight game without guard Ray Allen (sore right ankle). Allen, who remained in Boston for treatment, is expected to return when Boston hosts
Detroit on Wednesday. Rondo has stepped up with Allen out, collecting 31 points and 12 assists in his past two games. - NBA.com

Kevin Garnett Has No Problem With Redd And The Bucks
December 16, 2007
- The Boston Celtics are unbeatable at home this season, even with just two of their new Big Three. Paul Pierce scored a season-high 32 points and Kevin Garnett had an easy 15
with seven rebounds on Friday night, and the Celtics overcame Ray Allen's absence to beat the Milwaukee Bucks 104-82 and match the franchise record with a 12-0 start at home.
"I wanted to be a little bit more aggressive,'' Pierce said. "Especially with Ray out, (I wanted) to pick up some of the slack and get us going.'' Rajon Rondo scored 17 with eight
assists for Boston, which also won its first 12 home games in 1984. Led by the Big Three of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish, that team went to the '85 NBA finals.
Garnett, Pierce and Allen are leading the Celtics' efforts to hang another banner in the new Garden, but they are without Allen for a game or two because of a sore right ankle.
Instead, Tony Allen started and scored 11 with four steals while holding Michael Redd to seven points. "I thought Tony Allen was a spark tonight guarding Mike,'' Bucks coach Larry
Krystkowiak said. "I think that's one of the reasons Tony was in the lineup, to bring his energy.''
Redd is averaging 24 points this season, and he hadn't scored seven points or fewer since 2004. "Tony was awesome,'' Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "Mike Redd, he's an All-Star. That's
a tough matchup. If someone looked at the stat sheet you'd see 3-for-7. But if you had a game ball, you'd probably give it to Tony Allen.'' Garnett played just 29 minutes for the Celtics,
who pulled away when they outscored Milwaukee 32-15 in the third quarter. Boston will try to set the team record for home wins to start a season Wednesday against Detroit. - NBA.com

Kevin Garnett And Celtics Dethrone Sacramento Kings
December 13, 2007
- Breathtaking. That's a good way to describe the Boston Celtics' 18-2 start. The first start by rookie Glen Davis, "Big Baby'' to his teammates, wasn't much different.
"Baby was good after hyperventilating through the first half. He was terrific,'' coach Doc Rivers said after Davis had his best game as a pro to spark the Celtics to a
90-78 win over the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night. No wonder.
The soft-spoken hulk of a center was a bit starry-eyed to be starting alongside Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. Davis got the chance because Kendrick Perkins hurt
his right big toe in a freak accident when he dropped his bed on it after it tilted to one side and he tried to fix it. "You think all kinds of things,'' said Davis, who came
to Boston as a second-round draft pick from LSU with a power game and a cute nickname. "Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. You don't want to mess up. So just breathe in and breathe out,
absorb it. This is a beautiful thing here.''
The young-looking 289-pound center had 16 points and nine rebounds, and made all 10 of his free throws as Boston matched the best 20-game start in franchise history
and improved to 11-0 at home. "Baby was huge tonight,'' Garnett said. "He kept a lot of balls alive. He made youthful mistakes, but they were very aggressive mistakes.''
Davis was on the bench when the fourth quarter started and the Celtics clamped down on defense, outscoring the Kings 22-14 in the final period and holding them to their
lowest point total in a game this season.
"We were really upset with the way we played (defensively) in the first half and guys wanted to come out in the third and fourth quarters and be more active,'' Pierce said.
"We were able to get turnovers and get a run and open up the game a little bit.'' Pierce led Boston with 26 points, Allen had 15 and Garnett added 11. Sacramento, playing its
fourth straight game without their injured leading scorer, Kevin Martin, got 16 each from Ron Artest and Beno Udrih and 14 from Brad Miller. Point guard Mike Bibby has been
sidelined all season after undergoing thumb surgery. - NBA.com

Kevin Garnett And Celtics Extinct The Toronto Raptors
December 8, 2007
- Ray Allen was shaky, Kevin Garnett was quiet, and Paul Pierce flat out struggled. Trouble for the Boston Celtics? No. On a night when the three superstars
were less than super, Rajon Rondo matched a season-high with 18 points, and the Celtics continued their torrid pace by holding off the Chicago Bulls 92-81 on
Saturday night. Sure, Allen scored 21 points, but Rondo was the difference. "They are worried about KG, they are worried about Paul, they are worried about
myself,'' Allen said. "Him being so aggressive like that, it definitely gives us another angle to our offense.''
Boston was leading 86-70 after James Posey threw a behind-the-back pass to Allen with 5:23 remaining, but instead of cruising to a win, the Celtics had to hang
on. The Bulls scored the next 11 points, culminating with a three-point play by Andres Nocioni that made it 86-81 with just under a minute left. Garnett then hit
a fadeaway jumper, and the Celtics won their sixth straight. At 17-2, they own the league's best record. And it's easy to see why. Although coach Doc Rivers called
him a "roller coaster,'' Rondo was steady on a night when the Celtics three stars were up and down and hit 9 of 13 shots. "He's a roller coaster. He's a good one,
though,'' Rivers said. "He's a fast roller coaster is what he is. We believe in him. I think he is going to keep producing, I really do. He made some big jump shots
tonight.''
Allen struggled at times, going 6-for-16, but came up with several timely baskets. Garnett was steady, if unspectacular, finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds.
And Pierce flat out struggled, going 1-for-8 from the field with 10 points along with six turnovers. He got into early foul trouble and missed all four shots in the
first half before finally converting 1 1/2 minutes into the third quarter. Others stepped up. Rondo had one of his best games, finishing with seven rebounds and five
assists, Posey added 11 points and Glen Davis grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds.
"That was huge,'' Pierce said. "Every night it is somebody different because teams are so focus on me Kevin and Ray that guys are getting opportunities and they are
taking great advantage of it.'' Nocioni had a decent night for Chicago, which had won four of five and beat Detroit the previous night. He scored 18 after averaging
21 points in the previous four games, although he hit just 1 of 7 3-pointers. Kirk Hinrich added 16 points and six assists, while Luol Deng scored 15. But the league's
worst shooting team was off target again, going 31-of-86. Leading the brick brigade was Ben Gordon, who scored 13 points but was just 5-for-20. He missed all 10 of his
shots in the second half and is at 37.3 percent for the season. - NBA.com

Kevin Garnett And Celtics Extinct The Toronto Raptors

December 7, 2007
- Kevin Garnett scored 23 points and the Boston Celtics improved to 10-0 at home with a 112-84 win over the Toronto Raptors on Friday night. Paul Pierce had
18 points and Ray Allen 13 for Boston (16-2), which is off to the NBA's best start and its best home mark since opening the 1984-85 season 12-0. The Celtics
broke it open early. Boston has won all but one of its home games by double digits so far - eight by 20 points or more. None of the Celtics' starters played
the final quarter or saw 30 minutes of action.
Anthony Parker led the injury-riddled Raptors with 13 points. T.J. Ford, Joey Graham and Juan Dixon had 12 apiece. With the Raptors missing Chris Bosh and Andrea
Bargnani, two of their better inside players, the Celtics were able to work the ball down low easily and pull away in the second quarter.
The Celtics made nine of 15 shots in the quarter and hit 15 of 17 free throws. Allen scored nine points during an 11-2 run midway into the quarter that pushed Boston's
advantage to 49-28. The Celtics led 62-40 at halftime and, with Garnett scoring the first six of the second half, they pushed it to 70-40 on Rajon Rondo's fastbreak layup
2:06 into the third. They led 91-55 after three.

Brian Scalabrine nailed a 3-pointer midway into the fourth that made it 99-62 and prompted the sellout crowd of 18,624 to chant his last name.

Kevin Garnett And Celtics' Trio Hold Off The Sixers
December 5, 2007
- The Boston Celtics hung on against a feisty Philadelphia team thanks to their Big Three - and a couple of big 3s, too. Eddie House and James Posey
delivered decisive 3-pointers to help the usual, strong efforts of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen hold up for a 113-103 win over the 76ers
on Wednesday night. "You've got to have role players to have a good team,'' Celtics coach Doc Rivers said.
Pierce had 19 points and 12 assists, Garnett scored 22 points and Allen scored 12. House and Posey played their roles to near perfection. The duo went
7-for-13 on 3s that made all the difference late in the game against a Sixers team with something to prove. Posey scored 17 points, House had 15 and Boston's
bench outscored Philadelphia 46-26. "We were just making plays for each other and that helped us in the second half to come back, get a lead and get a win,''
Posey said.
Andre Miller kept the Sixers alive until the fourth with his first double-double of the season, a 26-point, 12-assist effort that was one of his best games in
Philadelphia. Andre Iguodala scored 24 points. The Sixers gave an inspired effort in their first game with Ed Stefanski as president and general manager. Stefanski
left his job as general manager of the Nets to take a similar role in Philadelphia after Billy King was fired on Monday.
The Sixers went ahead one last time, 88-86, on two of Miller's free throws. They played hard, played smart, even shot 56 percent from the floor, but they simply
couldn't stop the Celtics down the stretch. House hit consecutive 3s that sparked a 12-2 run that made it 98-90. Posey hit another 3 later in the fourth that pushed
the lead to 103-94 and the Sixers did not have another run left in them. "Those are big. They're back breakers,'' House said. Boston and Philadelphia, once the
fiercest of rivals, exchanged baskets in the third quarter to make this one a fun, competitive game. - NBA.com

Kevin Garnett Crawls Past The LeBron-Less Cavaliers
December 3, 2007
- Boston plodded to an 80-70 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday. But the NBA's leading scorer was sidelined with a sprained finger,
the NBA's best team had little energy, and the crowd that showed up for the rare 12:30 p.m. start was subdued. "Afternoon games aren't one of
my favorites to begin with,'' Boston's Kevin Garnett said.
He and Paul Pierce each scored under 10 points. Garnett had only nine in 26 minutes two games after his streak of 435 games, including playoffs,
of scoring in double figures ended when he had eight points in 23 minutes of a 104-59 win over the New York Knicks. "We just didn't have the energy
we normally come out with,'' said Pierce, who had seven points in 30 minutes. "I don't know if part of it was (the game) being early. I don't know if
part of it was LeBron not playing, but we usually come out with a better start.''
James, who missed his second straight game, is day-to-day, Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. The Celtics led just 43-39 at the end of a slow-paced first half.
It was 48-44 before an 8-point run put them ahead 56-44 with 4:52 left in the third quarter. That's when Cleveland called a timeout. James, watching from his
bench in street clothes, smiled and gestured toward Boston's Scot Pollard, who played on Cleveland's Eastern Conference finalists last season.
"When King James goes down, you feel like you have to carry the team by yourself offensively,'' Drew Gooden said. "I think we are started to get better at doing
that, but then again that is not our identity. Our identity is having him make plays for us.'' On Tuesday night, the Cavaliers handed the Celtics one of their two
losses of the season, 109-104 in overtime at Cleveland. James scored 38 points, 11 of them in overtime, and added 13 assists. - NBA.com

Kevin Garnett Heats Up In A Win Over Shaquille & Miami
December 2, 2007
- Paul Pierce scored 18 of his 27 points in the first quarter, Kevin Garnett added 23 and the NBA-leading Boston Celtics wasted most of
a 28-point lead before beating the Miami Heat 95-85 on Friday night. Ray Allen scored 17 for the Celtics, who prevailed despite missing
12 of 13 shots over an 8 1/2-minute span late in the game -- a drought that allowed Miami to make a huge comeback bid.
