August 31, 2007
- Kobe Bryant scored 27 points — 15 in the first quarter — and the United States cruised into the semifinals of the FIBA Americas
tournament as the No. 1 seed by beating Argentina 91-76 Thursday night.
The Americans took control early and were never threatened in the matchup with the defending Olympic gold medalists, who also came in undefeated
despite playing this qualifying tournament without the core of their team.
Carmelo Anthony added 18 points and LeBron James had 15 for the Americans, who will face Puerto Rico in one of Saturday's semifinal games.
A victory there gives them a berth in the 2008 Olympics.
That seems likely for a U.S. team (8-0) that had overwhelmed its opponents before playing their toughest foe in the finale of round-robin play.
LeBron James Is A Perfect Shot Against Uruguay!
August 30, 2007
- LeBron James couldn't miss, not from 3-point range and certainly not while soaring for a series of powerful dunks. And that was
all before halftime.
James was 11-for-11 from the field, making all four of his 3-point attempts, and scored 26 points in the first half Wednesday night
to lead the United States to a 118-79 victory over Uruguay in the FIBA Americas tournament.
In a sensational display of speed and power, James raised his tournament-leading shooting percentage to an almost comical 79.7 percent
(47-of-59). He is 14-of-20 from 3-point range, a 70 percent mark that also leads the event.
When James nailed a 3-pointer with 2:39 left to improve to 10-of-10, 4-of-4 behind the arc, all that seemed missing was a shoulder shrug
like Michael Jordan made after hitting all six of his 3-point attempts in the first half of Game 1 of the 1992 NBA finals against Portland.
James capped his half with one more dunk, going high above the rim and viciously throwing the ball down, stopping to look at the crowd for a
second after he landed. The Americans led 66-38 at halftime after shooting 63 percent (25-of-40) in the first half.
LeBron James and Team USA Surge Past Mexico!
August 28, 2007
- For the first time during this FIBA Americas Championship, the United States allowed an opponent to post a triple
digit scoring effort, but the Americans still managed a 27-point victory to remain undefeated in tournament play (5-0).
The USA raced out to a 45-23 lead after one quarter, but only seemed to be crisp in spurts over the next three in the eventual
127-100 victory.
After shooting 80 percent from the field in the first stanza, the United States cooled off in the second.
The USA was outscored 28-20 in the period and saw its' lead shrink to 14 points by halftime (65-51).
LeBron James' 16 third quarter points helped the Americans distance themselves once again, as the USA held a 101-78 lead after three.
Carmelo Anthony paced the United States with a game-high 28 point effort on 10-of-17 shooting from the field. - Tim Kuck
Barbosa Is No Match For LeBron James & Team USA!
August 27, 2007
- What looked to be an upset in the making turned out to be nothing more than another rout, the type that’s come to be expected when the U.S. men
take the floor at the Thomas & Mack Center for the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship.
“We beat a really good team today,” U.S. head coach Mike Krzyzewski said after his team won its closest contest of the tournament thus far, defeating
Brazil 113-76. “Brazil is one of the best international teams.”
“It’s the biggest team we’ve played,” Coach K said afterward. “They’re very strong. They have four big guys. You're concentrating on (Leandro) Barbosa,
you’re playing the bigs and their guards got by us a few times. And Splitter did a really good job in the first period, with driving the ball to the
basket. It was obviously their goal to do that.
“We put a lot of focus on Barbosa,” Chauncey Billups admitted. “He’s a dangerous player. He can beat you inside. He’s so fast and quick to the basket he
can get you in foul trouble. So we put a lot of emphasis on stopping him. Kobe (Bryant) started off and did a great job, trying to deny him the ball and
not let him get touches, playing physical with him. When he came out of the game, whether it was me or whoever else on him, we took the challenge and tried
to do the same thing. We thought if we could take him out of the game and make all those other guys make plays, then we had a great chance.”
Question and Answer Session With LeBron James!
August 26, 2007
- LeBron James traded his wine-and-gold 23 for a red, white and blue 6 this summer. He also left behind his leading scorer role in exchange for
hard work and humility to play along his USA teammates.
Here, he’s the player who prefers to pass the ball. Every pass he makes has been a lethal attack to the opposing team’s defense. It’s a new side of
LeBron and a great new phase to watch on the USA Basketball team.
Following the U.S. team's third victory against Canada, NBA.com spoke with one of the team's captains about his role and expectations in this tournament.
What do you think about this tournament’s format? Do you think it’s necessary to have such a long second week?
I’m not worried about that, we are spending this time with the entire team. We know we have to play a lot of games and have to keep the same energy in every game.
What do you think about this team’s depth?
It’s something that definitely makes a difference, not just because our bench is deep but because every player can contribute to the team. Shooting, rebounding, passing,
penetrating and making solid defensive plays.
What do you think about Brazil, your next opponent?
We’re ready for that game. They’ve also played a good tournament, so that game will determine who will be first in our group. They have players that can shake our team like
Leandro (Barbosa) and Nene, but we’re ready to face them.
How easy or difficult are these games for you guys, particularly since you’ve won all three by more than 50 points average?
We’re just playing collectively as a team, and we’ve done a great defensive job, defining plays. We’ve also been effective in the perimeter.
We’re having fun on the court.
Can you talk about the intensity with which you guys have played on the court the first few minutes?
We don’t want to give any advantages. We don’t want to give any team the opportunity to impose their game on us and complicate things. We won’t let any team breathe.
Any idea how long you held off Canada from making a basket in the second half?
No
Seven minutes.
Wow, then we played well.
How did you feel about having Dwyane Wade on the bench with the team today?
He’s a great friend, and he’s part of this team with all of us. Unfortunately he can’t be on the court with
us because of his injury, but his being here is a sign of his support and I know that for him, it’s real important for our team to be motivated.
You had a solid game in points, rebounds and assists.
They know me, that’s my game. I always try to include all my teammates in every play. The chemistry that we have is also helpful, we’re a lot more confident now.
In this team, it’s about all of us participating and making it as high as we can go. Scoring points is not important, what’s important is playing well and winning.
If I have to pass the ball more than I have to shoot, then that’s what I’m going to do over and over.
Are you surprised about your teammates’ level of play?
No, the truth is I’m used to this level in every one of them. I know them because I’ve had to play against them for four seasons in the NBA. I know what each team member is capable of doing. It’s the best team I’ve played with and I’m very proud of being a part of our success.
LeBron James and Team USA Breeze Past Canada!
August 26, 2007
- The United States remained perfect at the FIBA Americas 2007 Championship, coasting to a 113-63 victory over Canada on Saturday afternoon.
Winning its first three contests by an average of 52.3 points, the United States has yet to be challenged and now owns a 3-0 mark in tournament play.
Carmelo Anthony’s 12 first quarter points on five-of-five shooting from the field helped the USA get off to a hot start, but Canada’s 10-2 run to
close the period made it a 28-21 score. Any thoughts of the USA having its’ first real test, however, were quickly erased.
Throughout preliminary round play, the United States has shared the ball with great efficiency. Today was no exception. Seven players would score in
double figures and crisp passing always seem to get the ball into the hands of an open shooter. More times than not in today’s second quarter, that
shooter was Michael Redd. The USA’s resident marksman poured in 13 points in the period, helping the Americans open up a 65-34 lead at the half.
When LeBron James found Kobe Bryant streaking across the left baseline for a reverse layup with 4:49 remaining in the third quarter, the USA
stretched its’ lead to 81-39. James’ assist was one of 22 on the afternoon for the USA, which leads the tournament with 77 through three games.

LeBron James and Team USA Man Handle Virgin Islands!
August 24, 2007
- LeBron James’ thunderous baseline dunk with just over seven minutes remaining in the first quarter might have been the
signature play of the period, but it was the quick 15 points Michael Redd racked up that helped the USA build an early lead
which the U.S. Virgin Islands would never challenge. The USA coasted for the second consecutive night, this time by a final
score of 123-59.
The 42-point outburst by the USA in the opening stanza was fueled by Redd’s fluid stroke, as the sharpshooting guard hit
three-of-four three-pointers in the period before ultimately finishing with a game high 22 points. Carmelo Anthony also tallied
22 for the winners.
The home crowd had plenty of opportunities to rise and cheer the Americans, as a seemingly endless string of and alley-oops and
three-pointers characterized the night. The USA outscored the Virgin Islands 31-0 in fast break points and connected on 15-of-30
three-point field goals.
Alphonso Sheppard led the Virgin Islands with 11 points while Carl Krauser chipped in with nine in defeat.
With 8:28 remaining in the third quarter, Kobe Bryant stepped to the line to shoot two free throws and the crowd at Thomas & Mack
Center showered him with “Happy Birthday” to commemorate his 29th. Bryant hit both foul shots. - Tim Kuck
LeBron James and Team USA Crush Venezuela!
August 23, 2007
- In a tournament where most participating teams are lacking star power, the U.S. men's senior national team
took center stage Wednesday night and put on a show to make even a glitzy town like Las Vegas proud. En route
to winning its first contest in the FIBA Americas Championship 2007, 112-69 over Venezuela, the host team did
what most expected: Open up a big lead early and cruise to the victory. - Jeff Dengate
Anthony scored 17 points, Bryant added 14, and the United States rolled to a 112-69 victory Wednesday night in
its opening game of the FIBA Americas tournament.
Michael Redd also had 17 points, Amare Stoudemire scored 16 and Dwight Howard 12 for the Americans, who improved
to 27-0 in the regional Olympic qualifier. The Americans face the U.S. Virgin Islands in the final game Thursday night.
Bryant was making his long-awaited international debut, while Anthony was the leading American scorer last year at the
world championships. They needed a little more than a quarter to show they could be a formidable duo. - Associated Press
LeBron James and Kobe Bryant Comment On Each Other
August 22, 2007
- Kobe Bryant was already an NBA superstar when he first heard the rave about a teenage phenom from Ohio.
Bryant wanted to "check him out, firsthand," to see what the buzz was about. So one day when his Los Angeles
Lakers had a night off and one of LeBron James's high school games was on ESPN, Bryant tuned in.
"He was big — very big — versatile and could do a lot of things on the basketball court," Bryant said. "Usually
players at that age (17) don't develop the things he had until later in their careers. I said to myself, 'Uh-oh,
this guy can go. He is going to have to be reckoned with.' Obviously, I was right."
"I remember 1996 when he was drafted," James said. "I was like 11 years old, playing in an AAU tournament, and
when you're that young and you see anther guy who is only 17 or 18 going right to the NBA, you're automatically a fan.
"I saw how young he was and thought he was one of us. He's a kid like me." - USA Today

his fellow USA teammates to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and take back control of the Summer Olympics.
